How to Clean and Maintain Your Broom Head

Keeping your broom head clean not only improves performance but also extends its lifespan.

Follow these simple steps to clean your broom effectively:

1. Shake or Tap Off Loose Debris

Take the broom outside and tap it against a solid surface to dislodge dirt, dust, and loose hair.

2. Remove Stuck Debris

Use a gloved hand, a comb, or an old brush to pull out tangled hairs or stubborn debris from the bristles.

3. Wash the Broom Head

  • Plastic/Synthetic Brooms: Soak in warm soapy water for 15–30 minutes, then scrub if needed.
  • Natural Fibre Brooms (e.g. corn/straw): Dip quickly in soapy water without soaking and rinse immediately.

4. Rinse Thoroughly

Run clean water over the bristles to remove soap or residue completely.

5. Dry Properly

Hang the broom with the bristles facing down, or lay it flat in a dry, well-ventilated space. Never store a wet broom, as it encourages mould and odour.

Bonus Tip: Disinfect plastic broom heads with a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) for an added layer of hygiene. Aim to clean your broom every 1–2 months, or more frequently after tough jobs.
